Gachagua Warns Kenya’s SHA Faces Collapse in Six Months

Gachagua SHA collapse warning: Kenya’s healthcare debate has taken a dramatic turn after Rigathi Gachagua issued a strong warning about the future of the Social Health Authority (SHA). According to him, the government’s flagship health insurance system could collapse within six months if urgent action is not taken.

A Bold Warning on a Critical System

Speaking during recent public engagements, Gachagua did not hold back in his criticism of SHA. He openly questioned its sustainability and effectiveness.

Gachagua said “ I have information that sha will collapse in another 6months and we’ll have a crisis of unknown magnitude in health sector. Today as we speak our hospitals especially the faith-based hospitals are owed 90 billion and they are almost shutting down .”

His remarks have quickly sparked national debate, especially as millions of Kenyans are still adjusting to the new system.

What Is SHA and Why It Matters

The Social Health Authority (SHA) was introduced to replace the former National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). Its goal is to support Universal Health Coverage by making healthcare more accessible and affordable.

However, Gachagua believes the system is failing to meet expectations on the ground.

“Kenyans are still doing harambees to raise hospital bills. What does that tell you about this system?”

Concerns Raised by Gachagua

Gachagua SHA collapse warning: Gachagua’s criticism focuses on real-life struggles faced by ordinary citizens. He argues that despite the introduction of SHA, many families are still unable to access affordable healthcare.

“We removed NHIF, which was working, and replaced it with something that is confusing and unreliable.”

These statements reflect growing frustration among some sections of the public who feel the transition has not been smooth.

A System Under Pressure

SHA has faced several challenges since its rollout. Reports point to delays in payments to hospitals, system inefficiencies, and confusion among users.

Gachagua insists these issues are signs of a deeper problem.

“This system is not stable. It cannot sustain itself in its current form.”

His warning has added pressure on the government to respond and reassure citizens.

Government Response

Despite the criticism, the government continues to defend SHA. Leaders, including William Ruto, have maintained that the system is still in transition and will improve over time.

Officials argue that millions of Kenyans have already registered and that the program is beginning to deliver results.

However, Gachagua remains unconvinced.

“You cannot experiment with people’s health. This is too important to get wrong.”

Political and Public Reactions

Gachagua’s remarks have drawn mixed reactions across the country. Some Kenyans agree with his concerns, especially those who have faced challenges using SHA.

Others believe the system needs more time to stabilize.

At the same time, political analysts see his comments as part of a broader national conversation about governance and accountability.

What Happens Next?

If Gachagua’s warning is anything to go by, the next few months will be critical for Kenya’s healthcare system.

The government may need to act quickly to:

  • Fix operational challenges
  • Improve communication with citizens
  • Restore trust in the system

Final Thoughts

The warning from Rigathi Gachagua has added urgency to the debate around SHA. His message is clear: without immediate reforms, the system could face serious trouble.

Whether his prediction becomes reality or not, one thing is certain—healthcare remains one of the most important issues for Kenyans today.

And as the debate continues, millions are watching closely, hoping for a system that truly works for them.
