The wait is almost over for muscle car enthusiasts. After a brief but painful hiatus following the 2024 model year, Chevrolet is officially set to revive its iconic pony car. According to a new report from Car and Driver, the 2028 Chevy Camaro is poised to return to the streets, and it is bringing an American V-8 with it.
In an era where electrification is dominating headlines and Dodge struggles with the Charger Daytona’s EV growing pains, Chevy is doubling down on gasoline. The seventh-generation Camaro aims to fill the “attainable performance” gap left in the bowtie brand’s lineup, currently occupied only by the high-priced Corvette.
What We Know So Far
The 2028 Camaro isn’t starting from scratch, and that is good news for tuning fans. The car is expected to ride on an updated version of the Alpha platform—the same excellent chassis that underpinned the last Camaro and the legendary Cadillac CT4-V and CT5-V Blackwings.
Rather than switching to a completely new architecture, Chevy is reworking the “Alpha 2” platform to keep the car rear-wheel-drive, though all-wheel-drive options may be available to compete with the new Charger.
While the current trend leans toward four-door “coupes,” the Camaro will likely stick to its roots as a two-door sports car with 2+2 seating. However, designers are reportedly looking backward to move forward; expect a fastback design with a sloping roofline and a hatch, recalling the beloved third and fourth-generation cars from the 80s and 90s.
Under the Hood: The LS6 V-8
Here is the headline gearheads have been waiting for: The V-8 lives.
While a base model will likely utilize a turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four (making around 325 horsepower) to keep the entry price low, the real excitement is the optional engine. Car and Driver reports that the 2028 Camaro will borrow the new LS6 6.7-liter small-block V-8 debuting in the 2027 Corvette.
In Corvette trim, this monster produces 535 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque. That is a massive leap over the previous Camaro SS. Furthermore, enthusiasts can hold out hope for high-performance ZL1 or Z/28 variants, which might eventually snag the Corvette’s optional 5.5-liter flat-plane crank V-8.
Perhaps the most critical detail for the purists is the transmission. While a 10-speed automatic is a lock for speed and efficiency, Chevrolet is experiencing pressure to keep the six-speed manual alive.
Pricing and the Competition
Production of the 2028 Camaro is schedule to begin in late 2027 at the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan. When it arrives as a 2028 model, pricing will be critical.
Chevy needs to keep t2028 Chevy Camaro: What We Know So Farhis car affordable to separate it from the $70,000+ Corvette. Estimates suggest a four-cylinder model will start around $40,000, while the V-8 SS models will likely start north of $50,000. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a71002717/2028-chevy-camaro-future-cars/
The Camaro will re-enter a gladiator pit to face the Ford Mustang and the gas-powered Dodge Charger Sixpack.
The Bottom Line
The return of the Camaro proves that General Motors hasn’t given up on internal combustion just yet. By sticking with the proven Alpha platform and a roaring new LS6 V-8, the 2028 Camaro isn’t just a nostalgia play—it is a direct challenge to the competition. As long as Chevy doesn’t botch the design or kill the manual transmission, the King of the Pony Cars might finally be ready to reclaim its throne.
